The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires provision of emergency lighting, emergency routes and exits to be made available and routinely serviced. The provision must be of adequate intensity in the case of failure of normal lighting.
In the event of a power failure emergency lighting should adequately illuminate all escape routes aiding safe evacuation from the building.
Emergency lighting should be installed and maintained in accordance with BS 5266.
